Dear Louis Families,
On Tuesday June 5th Louis Riel will be participating in Calgary’s BIKE TO SCHOOL DAY. The use of active transportation helps to reduce congestion, improve air quality and promote health. Students who travel to school actively arrive at school more alert, focused and ready to learn. We invite all students at Louis Riel to participate, if they can safely get to and from schools on their bike. Since a large population of our school is bused, we invite students to meet at a central location and ride as a group or meeting area closer to the school.
We are having a “friendly” competition with John Ware for Bike to School Day on June 5th!! The winning school (the school with the high percentage of students who rode their bikes to school) will be giving the losing principal a school hoodie that that Principal will have to wear for the week with photo evidence provided 😉
MRS. GOODMAN DOES NOT WANT TO WEAR A LONGHORNS HOODIE FOR A WEEK!!!
Reminder to all students participating to please use bike lines, pedestrian crossings and always wear a helmet.

Movement with a Message: School Program
For the past 20 years our Artistic Director, Connie Jakab has been teaching resilience in schools through dance. Artists from our show Letters, Ryan DeGuzman and Rebecca Dawn, have at the same time been using the art of rap to give youth a voice. What moves them? The fact that over the last ten years, Canadian youth have experienced a great increase in mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and mood disorders. One in every five students in schools now deal with at least one of these mental health issues.
Reminder to all 7-9 students that you do not need to change for PE next week. Please bring your gym strip home for spring break for a wash!

DARE TO CARE
Information Letter for Parents Gr 7-9
From January 29th – Feb 1st, all students at Louis Riel school will take part in a half day workshop with a national award-winning organization called Dare to Care. Dare to Care was founded in 1999 because of a need to address the pervasive and crippling issue of bullying that continues to affect children, youth, and adults to this day. The goal of the program is to help ensure that ALL students feel safe, welcome, and included in their school and community.
The workshops are carefully designed to facilitate important dialogue and a much deeper understanding of everyone’s role in creating a truly safe and inclusive environment. Through a combination of assembly style presentations, videos, interactive activities and discussions, all students will discover that they really do have the power to make a difference in their school and community.
To give you an idea, students will learn about the difference between normal conflict and true bullying, the impact of cyber-bullying, peer pressure, and bystander influence. For many of the students and staff, this process will be very impactful and perhaps even emotional. We encourage you to have some dialogue with your child regarding their experience so please take the time to have them reflect upon the session, including what they’ve learned and the activities they participated in. As always, we thank you for your ongoing support as we continue our efforts in creating and maintaining a safe and inclusive environment for our school community.
Monday, January 29th – Grade 7’s (morning)
Tuesday, January 30th – Grade 8’s (morning)

TERRY FOX RUN 2017
800 + students k-9!!! Over $1000.00 RAISED FOR THE TERRY FOR FOUNDATION
Once again Louis Riel is pleased to be hosting its annual Terry Fox Walk/Run on Thursday September 28, 2017 at 10:30 am for grade K-9 students. We will start our run/walk off with an assembly and guest speaker from the Terry Fox Foundation.
Our walk/run will follow a route through the community (please see attched map). The course is approximately 1.5 kilometers in length and students will be encouraged to complete the course walking or running for approximately 50 mins. Terry’s Marathon of Hope modeled resiliency as he continued his run through rain and snow. As a community we will carry on this tradition and run rain or shine. We ask all students to come dressed prepared for the weather, including appropriate footwear and water bottle. Teachers, parents and supervisors will be on hand to supervise and assist students along the way. We invite parents and community members to join us on our run/walk.
As the run is during school hours, all students are expected to take part. Students who may have limited mobility will help with set up and take down that day. Students will be collecting Toonies for Terry in their homeroom classes, and all money will be forwarded to The Terry Fox Foundation. We are very proud to be associated with The Terry Fox Foundation and believe that our involvement will launch a successful, positive and meaningful school year.
We are also very proud of our contribution to cancer research. Since our last event, almost $2,000 has been raised by the students, parents and teachers of the Louis Riel community for cancer research. If you would like to make a donation you can do so on our school run page http://www.terryfox.ca/LouisRiel or you can drop off your donation in the main office. Please note the school cannot issue receipts for donations, if you require a receipt please donate online. We appreciate the support and involvement of our parent community.
Let’s keep Terry’s dream to find a cure for cancer alive.
Thank you in advance.
